


The Gilbert Lab is recruiting two new graduate students to begin in January 2027
MS position: Heron Surveys
This student will join a project funded by the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation to provide up-to-date information on heron nesting colonies in Oklahoma, with a special emphasis on Little Blue Heron and Snowy Egret, which are currently designated as Species of Greatest Conservation Need by the state. The student’s work will involve 1) canvassing stakeholders to generate knowledge of colony locations and 2) two field seasons to search for and monitor nesting colonies across the state.
MS/PhD position: Great Plains Bird Monitoring
This student will join a project funded by the National Park Service (NPS) to conduct surveys of breeding bird communities in 13 NPS properties in the northern Great Plains. The student’s work will involve 1) two summers of field work (including supervision of 3 technicians per season) to conduct bird and vegetation surveys and 2) modeling of bird data to estimate abundance, trends, and composition of NPS bird communities.
