OSU Study on Urban Wildlife
In October 2024, The Gilbert Lab, in collaboration with The Lonsinger Lab in the Department of Natural Resource Ecology and Management at OSU, joined the Urban Wildlife Information Network, an international collaboration of research groups who monitor wildlife with game cameras along rural-to-urban gradients across cities. There are 60 cities represented in the network (Stillwater is the first in Oklahoma), which have collected many millions of photos of wildlife. The Lab has established 30 camera locations divided into urban Stillwater (brown points; >40% impervious cover within 1 km of camera location), edge neighborhoods (yellow points; 10-40% impervious cover), and rural landscapes (green points; <10% impervious cover). The first month-long deployment in October captured many wildlife photos, including bobcats, gray fox, armadillos, and--of course--lots of deer.
